Now is the Blue (2010)

now is the blue takes its title from a line from James Agee’s essay “Knoxville: Summer of 1915,” from A Death in the Family:

“now is the night one blue dew, my father has drained, he has coiled the hose…”

This music was inspired by a 3 AM drive in small-town Massachusetts, listening to Samuel Barber’s orchestral song on the car radio and smelling the overwhelmingly fragrant, almost iridescent blossoms of early spring among the wet blue blanket of an April night.

Many thanks to P. Lucy McVeigh for the use of her recorded voice.
