Light Message (I Went On Without You) (2008)

FOR AMPLIFIED SOPRANO, PIANO, TAPE, VIDEO, AND WINEGLASSES

“Light Message (I Went On Without You)” was composed for vocalist Megan Schubert in 2008. It depicts a haunting, fragmented narrative of a young girl experiencing a repressed memory from childhood, of playing duets at the piano with an older girl who also physically violated her. The final section, “Ghost Lullaby” re-enacts the duet as between the now-grown child and the ghostly memory of the abuser.

In the live performance, audience members are given microtonally-tuned wineglasses. They are asked to play them during the final section, as part of a collective ritual of remembering.
